Trobleshoot and fix Transmission Problems

1. Analysis the colour of the transmission fluid. Pull out the dipstick from the transmission filler neck. If the transmission fluid is brown, it is likely burnt. If it smells burnt, then obviously it is. Have the fluid changed immediately to prevent serious damage.


2. Check for rough shifts while in "drive." If your transmission is an automatic, rough shifting is often symptomatic of low transmission fluid levels. This is simple to fix. Pull out the transmission dipstick and wipe it off with a rag. Look on the end of the dipstick. There will be a lower and upper mark on the end of the dipstick. Fill the transmission through the filler neck where you pulled out the stick (using a funnel) until the fluid level is between the upper and lower mark on the dipstick. Periodically check the fluid level by putting the dipstick down into the filler neck and pulling it back out again.
