Specs For Any '78 Oldsmobile Cutlass

The nameplate Cutlass is nearly synonymous with the Oldsmobile Trade-mark designation. Throughout the senescence, Regular Motors offered many editions of the Oldsmobile Cutlass. The One thousand nine hundred seventy eight model was among the most significant.

Body

The 4-4-2 package (four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts) was available on Salon coupes. It featured exterior 4-4-2 decals, special seats and badges inside and a performance suspension featuring quicker-ratio steering, heavier springs, stiffer shocks, a stiffer front stabilizer bar, a rear stabilizer bar and bigger tires. Sedans, coupes and station wagon versions of the car were sold.

Engine

Oldsmobile equipped the Cutlass with both gasoline and diesel engines. The diesel was a 4.2-liter unit produced by Oldsmobile. Conventional eight-cylinder gas engines were produced as well. Buyers could choose a 5.0-liter Chevy, a 4.9-liter Pontiac or a 4.3-liter Oldsmobile engine. Some models had a less powerful 3.8-liter Oldsmobile six-cylinder engine.

4-4-2

The One thousand nine hundred seventy eight Cutlass was the first "downsized" Cutlass. Cooncerns about fuel economy caused GM to shorten the A-body chassis that was used for manufacturing the Cutlass. The Cutlass wheelbase dropped Four inches to a length of One hundred eight inches.
