Lightweight and authoritative: it is a basic criteria used by manufacturers of high-performance sports cars worldwide. During the early 1960s, it was the notion realized by Carroll Shelby when he took the lightweight A.C. Ace roadster, a British sports automobile, and fitted it with a convincing Ford V-8 engine.
Engine Size
When Shelby painted the basic Cobra chicken and shipped it to the Contemporary York Car expo in Apr, 1962, it was equipped with a 260-cubic-inch V-8 from the Ford Fairlane. By 1963, he had increased the engine bigness to Two hundred eighty nine cubic inches. In the original review of the 1963 Cobra, by "MotorTrend," the author wrote; "With a base price of $5,995, the Cobra doesn't come cheap, but if you fancy yourself an enthusiast and you want the most out of your dollar, we'd recommend a serious look and a personal test drive in this car". In an updated review, by "MotorTrend" in 1999, they said "What every one of us wouldn't give for a wayback machine set to 1963. True car guys would march into their Ford dealer, plunk down $5,995, and drive home in a Cobra. If the Corvette was the luxury sports car of 1963, the Cobra was the streetable race car built for real men. No windows. No heater. No insulation. None of that wimpy stuff. During testing performed by "MotorTrend," the top rush came up short, at One hundred thirty mph.
