Place the pad against the piston, and begin tightening the clamp against it until you’ve compressed the piston all of the way. Once the piston has been pushed back, loosen and remove the clamp and old pad.
6. Spray the slide pin grooves on the caliper with brake cleaner if you have an older Explorer. If the grooves are especially dirty, clean them with a wire brush. Otherwise, insert the new brake pads. The pads will simply clip into place.
7. Reattach the caliper. Hammer the slide pins back into place or tighten the bolts, depending on the year of your Explorer.
8. Replace the wheel. Tighten the lug nuts and lower the Explorer. Make sure the lug nuts are tight. Change the brake pads on the other side of the Explorer using the same technique. When you’re done, check the fluid level in the master cylinder. If any fluid has been pushed out, replace it with new fluid and tighten the cap.
9. Start your Ford Explorer, and pump the brakes until you feel the pressure build up to where it should be.
