Put the new starter in its place. Start the bolts by hand to secure the starter to the mounting brackets. Tighten both bolts with a socket wrench.6.


2. Locate the starter underneath the truck on the passenger side. The starter will be located on the passenger side of the truck between the engine and the transmission.


3. Crawl under the truck and locate the two wires bolted to the top of the starter on the solenoid. Unbolt the wires from the harness with a socket wrench. There will be two sets of wires to disconnect. Be sure to remember which wire came from which stud.


4. Unscrew the two bolts with a socket wrench. There will be one bolt on the top and the other bolt on the bottom of the starter.


5. Pull the starter down from the engine compartment.1. Open the S-10's hood and disable the battery. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post, using a ratchet and socket to loosen the cable clamp's retainer bolt.


Attach the two wiring harnesses to the solenoid on top of the starter. Unscrew the nuts on the studs and place the wires on the studs. Be sure that each wire is connected to the correct stud.


7. Connect the battery cables to the battery. Ensure that the positive cable is connected to the terminal designated with a plus ("+") symbol. The negative cable will go to the terminal marked with a minus ("-") symbol.


8. Start the S-10 to ensure you've corrected the problem. Close the hood.
